Welcome to the Legacy Trust Award Collection

COMPETITION OVERVIEW

Background

When ArtPrize burst onto the scene in 2009, it had a transformative effect on art and the West Michigan community. Yet the event posed some challenges that made it difficult for everyone interested to participate. The following year, as we looked at ways that Legacy Trust could have a meaningful role in the social dialogue, we decided to establish a statewide competition for adult artists with disabilities. We partnered with VSA/Very Special Arts, which is now Artists Creating Together, to establish a friendly competition that would showcase the paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and other artworks of artists with disabilities. The three top vote-getters formed the Legacy Trust Art Collection. In addition to cash prizes, we provided marketing, logistic and other support to allow the artists to enter ArtPrize. Not only did the competition share some amazing artistic talent with the community, it also helped to broaden the reach of ArtPrize and create greater opportunities for participation for Michigan artists with disabilities.

The Collection

The Legacy Trust Award Collection is a statewide art competition designed to provide assistance to adult artists with disabilities to facilitate their participation in ArtPrize 2012. LTAC is a partnership between Legacy Trust and Artists Creating Together, an agency who brings children, youth and adults with disabilities together with artists, the arts and art projects.

Artists from all genres are invited to participate in the competition. The public will have a chance to view and vote on the art on Friday, May 18, from 9 a.m to 3:30 p.m. in the Ledyard Building in downtown Grand Rapids. A private reception for all artists, judges and LTAC supporters will be held the night before.

The two top vote-getting artists will be chosen for the Collection, with a third artist selected by a panel of local Grand Rapids celebrity judges.

In addition to receiving a cash prize of $500, the three winners will have their artwork entered into ArtPrize, scheduled this year for Sept. 19 through Oct. 7 in downtown Grand Rapids.
